Deep learning frameworks have been successfully applied to tackle many challenging tasks in pattern recognition and computer vision thanks to its ability to automatically extract representative features from the training data. Such type of data- driven approach, however, is subject to the criticism of too much dependency on the training set. In this research, we attempt to investigate the validity of this statement: ‘deep learning is only as good as its data’ by evaluating the performance of deep learning models using heterogeneous data sets, in which distinct representations of the same source data are employed for training/testing. We have examined three cases: low-resolution image, severely compressed input and halftone image in this work. Our preliminary results indicate that such dependency indeed exists. Classifier performance drops considerably when the model is tested with modified or transformed input. The best outcomes are obtained when the model is trained with hybrid input.

The 9th Brazilian Conference on Intelligent Systems (BRACIS), the 16h Encontro Nacional de Inteligência Artificial e Computacional (ENIAC), and the 12th Concurso de Teses e Dissertações em Inteligência Artificial e Computacional (CTDIAC) was held from 20 to 23 October, 2020.

BRACIS originated from the combination of the two most important scientific events in Brazil in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Intelligence (CI): the Brazilian Symposium on Artificial Intelligence - SBIA (22 editions), and the Brazilian Symposium on Neural Networks - SBRN (13 editions). ENIAC is a national forum for researchers, practitioners, educators and students to present and discuss innovations, trends, experiences, developments and work in progress in the fields of Artificial and Computational Intelligence. CTDIAC is a satellite event whose goals are to disseminate and award the best dissertations and theses (MSc and PhDs concluded in Brazilian universities from June 2018 to May 2020) in Artificial and Computational Intelligence areas.

In this year, the Symposium on Knowledge Discovery, Mining and Learning (KDMiLe) will be held in conjunction with BRACIS 2020. This sysposium aims at integrating researchers, practitioners, developers, students and users to present their research results, to discuss ideas, and to exchange techniques, tools, and practical experiences – related to the Data Mining and Machine Learning areas.

ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review. 

In this edition of the **ICPR 2020** Conference, there are 1407 Oral/Poster presentations organized in five Tracks: 
- Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning for Pattern Analysis; 
- Biometrics, Human Analysis and Behavior Understanding; Computer Vision, Robotics and Intelligent Systems; 
- Document and Media Analysis; and 
- Image and Signal Processing. 

The **ICPR 2020** Main Conference program also includes 7 Keynotes from prominent world-renowned scientists, 8 Tutorials, 28 Demos, 8 Challenges, 2 Panels, as well as an Industry/Sponsor Exhibition. In addition, 41 Workshops on a range of important current and emerging research topics complete the ICPR 2020 program. 



This paper presents a multi-channel Extended Depth of Field (EDF) method for digital cytology based on the stationary wavelet transform. With a coefficient selection rule adapted to a precise color recovery, a sharp image can be reconstructed even on images with transparent overlapping cells. The precision and the color fidelity of the proposed method is analyzed. Moreover, an experiment demonstrating the necessity of volume analysis in cytology to achieve precise segmentation on cell clumps is conducted, and the importance of color fidelity in this context is asserted. The proposed method was tested on pap-stained urothelial cells and gray-scale cervical cells with important overlapping.

Extended Depth of Field Preserving Color Fidelity For Automated Digital Cytology

Accurate and fine-grained information about the extent of damage to buildings is essential for directing Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Response (HADR) operations in the immediate aftermath of any natural calamity. In recent years, satellite and UAV (drone) imagery has been used for this purpose, sometimes aided by computer vision algorithms. Existing Computer Vision approaches for building damage assessment
typically rely on a two stage approach, consisting of building detection using an object detection model, followed by damage assessment through classification of the detected building tiles. These multi-stage methods are not end-to-end trainable, and
suffer from poor overall results. We propose RescueNet, a unified model that can simultaneously segment buildings and assess the damage levels to individual buildings and can be trained end-toend. In order to to model the composite nature of this problem, we propose a novel localization aware loss function, which consists
of a Binary Cross Entropy loss for building segmentation, and a foreground only selective Categorical Cross-Entropy loss for damage classification, and show significant improvement over the widely used Cross-Entropy loss. RescueNet is tested on the large scale and diverse xBD dataset and achieves significantly better building segmentation and damage classification performance than previous methods and achieves generalization across varied geographical regions and disaster types.

RescueNet: Joint Building Segmentation and Damage Assessment from Satellite Imagery

Multi-task learning is an effective learning strategy for deep-learning-based facial expression recognition tasks. However, most existing methods take into limited consideration the feature selection, when transferring information between different tasks, which may lead to task interference when training the multi-task networks. To address this problem, we propose a novel selective feature-sharing method, and establish a multi-task network for facial expression recognition and facial expression synthesis. The proposed method can effectively transfer beneficial features between different tasks, while filtering out useless and harmful information. Moreover, we employ the facial expression synthesis task to enlarge and balance the training dataset to further enhance the generalization ability of the proposed method. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance on those commonly used facial expression recognition benchmarks, which makes it a potential solution to real-world facial expression recognition problems.

Deep Multi-task Learning for Facial Expression Recognition and Synthesis Based on Selective Feature Sharing


Image inpainting faces the challenging issue of the requirements on structure reasonableness and texture coherence. In this paper, we propose a two-stage inpainting framework to address this issue. The basic idea is to address the two requirements in two separate stages. Completed segmentation of the corrupted image is firstly predicted through segmentation reconstruction network, while fine-grained image details are restored in the second stage through an image generator. The two stages are connected in series as the image details are generated under the guidance of completed segmentation map that predicted in the first stage. Specifically, in the second stage, we propose a novel graph-based relation network to model the relationship existed in corrupted image. In relation network, both intra-relationship for pixels in the same semantic region and inter-relationship between different semantic parts are considered, improving the consistency and compatibility of image textures. Besides, contrastive loss is designed to facilitate the relation network training. Such a framework not only simplifies the inpainting problem directly, but also exploits the relationship in corrupted image explicitly. Extensive experiments on various public datasets quantitatively and qualitatively demonstrate the superiority of our approach compared with the state-of-the-art.

Image Inpainting with Contrastive Relation Network

We propose to unify two trends in unsupervised person re-ID: clustering & fine-tuning and adversarial learning. Since target data is distributed across different camera viewpoints, we propose to model each camera as an independent domain, and aim to learn domain-independent features. Straightforward adversarial learning yields negative transfer, we thus introduce a conditioning strategy to mitigate this undesirable effect. We evaluate the proposed architecture on two state-of-the-art clustering-based unsupervised person re-identification (re-ID) methods and three different data sets and set the new state-of-the-art performance on all three of them.

CANU-ReID: A Conditional Adversarial Network for Unsupervised person Re-IDentification

Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has achieved great success in processing vision-based driving tasks. However, the end-to-end training manner makes DRL agents suffer from overfitting training scenes. The agents easily fail to generalize to unseen environments. In this paper, we propose a deep reinforcement learning for autonomous driving by transferring visual features. We formulate the DRL training as a perception and control module and introduce adversarial training mechanism for autonomous driving. The perception module is able to extract invariant features between different domains through adversarial training. While the DRL agent can then be trained on the basis of low dimensional states. In this manner, the proposed approach enables trained agents to adapt to unseen environments by learning robust features invariant across various scenes. We evaluate the proposed approach by transferring visual features between different simulators. The experimental results demonstrate the driving policy trained in the source domain can be directly applied in the target domain, and achieve great efficient and effective performance for autonomous driving.

Deep Reinforcement Learning for Autonomous Driving by Transferring Visual Features

For diagnosis and risk assessment in patients with stable ischemic heart disease, myocardial perfusion scintigraphy is one of the most common cardiological examinations performed today. There are however many motivations for why an artificial intelligence algorithm would provide useful input to this task. For example to reduce the subjectiveness and save time for the nuclear medicine physicians working with this time consuming task. In this work we have developed a deep learning algorithm for multi-label classification based on a convolutional neural network to estimate the probability of obstructive coronary artery disease in the left anterior artery, left circumflex artery and right coronary artery. The prediction is based on data from myocardial perfusion scintigraphy studies conducted in a dedicated Cadmium-Zinc-Telluride cardio camera (D-SPECT Spectrum Dynamics). Data from 588 patients was available, with stress images in both upright and supine position, as well as a number of auxiliary parameters such as angina symptoms and age. The data was used to train and evaluate the algorithm using 5-fold cross-validation. We achieve state-of-the-art results for this task with an area under the receiver operating characteristics curve of 0.89 as average on per-vessel level and 0.95 on per-patient level.

Prediction of Obstructive Coronary Artery Disease from Myocardial Perfusion Scintigraphy using Deep Neural Networks

Seismocardiogram (SCG) has become easily accessible in the past decade owing to the advance of sensor technology. However, SCG biometric has not been widely explored. In this paper, we propose combining wavelet transform together with deep learning models, machine learning classifiers, or distance metric to perform SCG biometric matching tasks. We validate the proposed methods on the publicly available dataset from PhysioNet database. The dataset contains one hour long electrocardiogram, breathing, and SCG data of 20 subjects. We train the models on the first five minute SCG and conduct identification on the last five minute SCG. We evaluate the identification and authentication performance with recognition rate and equal error rate, respectively. Based on the results, we show that wavelet transformed SCG biometric can achieve state-of-the-art performance when combined with deep learning models, machine learning classifiers, or structural similarity metric.


Exploring Seismocardiogram Biometrics with Wavelet Transform

An advanced simulation framework has recently been introduced for exploring human perception and visuomotor control. In this context, we investigate locally-connected, irregular deep neural networks (liNets) for biomimetic active vision. Like commonly used CNNs, liNets are locally-connected, forming receptive fields, but unlike CNNs, they are suitable for spatially irregular photoreceptor distributions inspired by those found in foveated biological retinas. Compared to fully connected
deep neural networks, liNets accommodate a much greater number of retinal photoreceptors to enhance visual acuity without intractable memory consumption. LiNets serve well in the biomimetic active vision system embodied in a simulated human that learns active visuomotor control and active appearance based recognition.

Locally-Connected, Irregular Deep Neural Networks for Biomimetic Active Vision in a Simulated Human

In this paper, we propose an occlusion-robust pose estimation method of an unknown object instance in an object category from a depth image. In a cluttered environment, objects are often occluded mutually. For estimating the pose of an object in such a situation, a method that de-occludes the unobservable area of the object would be effective. However, there are two difficulties; occlusion causes the offset between the center of the actual object and its observable area, and different instances in a category may have different shapes. To cope with these difficulties, we propose a two-stage Encoder-Decoder model to extract features with objects whose centers are aligned to the image center. In the model, we also propose the Median-shape Reconstructor as the second stage to absorb shape variations in a category. By evaluating the method with both a large-scale virtual dataset and a real dataset, we confirmed the proposed method achieves good performance on pose estimation of an occluded object from a depth image.
