Machine learning driven object detection and classification within non-visible imagery has an important role in many fields such as night vision, all-weather surveillance and aviation security. However, such applications often suffer due to the limited quantity and variety of non-visible spectral domain imagery, in contrast to the high data availability of visible-band imagery that readily enables contemporary deep learning driven detection and classification approaches. To address this problem, this paper proposes and evaluates a novel data augmentation approach that leverages the more readily available visible-band imagery via a generative domain transfer model. The model can synthesise large volumes of non-visible domain imagery by image-to-image (I2I) translation from the visible image domain. Furthermore, we show that the generation of interpolated mixed class (non-visible domain) image examples via our novel Conditional CycleGAN Mixup Augmentation (C2GMA) methodology can lead to a significant improvement in the quality of non-visible domain classification tasks that otherwise suffer due to limited data availability. Focusing on classification within the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) domain, our approach is evaluated on a variation of the Statoil/C-CORE Iceberg Classifier Challenge dataset and achieves 75.4% accuracy, demonstrating a significant improvement when compared against traditional data augmentation strategies (Rotation, Mixup, and MixCycleGAN).

ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review. 

In this edition of the **ICPR 2020** Conference, there are 1407 Oral/Poster presentations organized in five Tracks: 
- Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning for Pattern Analysis; 
- Biometrics, Human Analysis and Behavior Understanding; Computer Vision, Robotics and Intelligent Systems;

The target of our proposed method is to optimize the shape of airfoil geometries to fulfill some given fluid dynamical quantities, which are acting as physical constraints for the optimization process e.g., forces or the pressure difference can be used as constraints. In the first step, a U-Net is trained to learn the underlying fluid dynamics to infer the flow field from a given input geometry. In the second step, a Spatial Transformer Network (STN) is stacked in front of the U-Net to optimize the shape of an initial input geometry, such that the output geometry fulfills the physical constraints.


Transferable Model for Shape Optimization subject to Physical Constraints

Wrist-wearable devices such as smartwatch have gained popularity as they provide quick access to various information and easy access to multiple applications. Among the smartwatch applications, user verification based on the handwriting is gaining momentum by considering its reliability and user-friendliness. In this paper, we present a novel technique for user verification using a smartwatch based on a writing pattern or style. The proposed approach leverages accelerometer data captured from the smartwatch that is further represented using 2D Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) and deep features extracted using the pre-trained ResNet50. These features are classified using the ensemble of the classifier to make the final decision on user verification. Extensive experiments are carried out on the newly captured dataset using two different smartwatches with three different writing scenarios (or activities). Experimental results provide critical insights and analysis of the results in such a verification scenario.

Handwritten Signature and Text based User Verification using Smartwatch

Nowadays, in the area of autonomous driving, the computational power of the object detectors is limited by the embedded devices and the public datasets for autonomous driving are over-idealistic. In this paper, we propose a pipeline combining both block-wise pruning and channel-wise pruning to compress the object detection model iteratively. We enforce the introduced factor of the residual blocks and the scale parameters in Batch Normalization (BN) layers to sparsity to select the less important residual blocks and channels. Moreover, a modified loss function has been proposed to remedy the class-imbalance problem. After removing the unimportant structures iteratively, we get the pruned YOLOv3 trained on our datasets which have more abundant and elaborate classes. Evaluated by our validation sets on the server, the pruned YOLOv3 saves 79.7% floating point operations (FLOPs), 93.8% parameter size, 93.8% model volume and 45.4% inference times with only 4.16% mean of average precision (mAP) loss. Evaluated on the embedded device, the pruned model operates about 13 frames per second with 4.53% mAP loss. These results show that the real-time property and accuracy of the pruned YOLOv3 can meet the needs of the embedded devices in complicated autonomous driving environments.

Compression of YOLOv3 via Block-wise and Channel-wise Pruning for Real-time and Complicated Autonomous Driving Environment Sensing Applications

The advancement of deep learning technology has enabled us to develop systems that outperform any other classification technique. However, success of any empirical system depends on the quality and diversity of the data available to train the proposed system. In this research, we have carefully accumulated a relatively challenging dataset that contains images collected from various sources for three different disasters: fire, water and land. Besides this, we have also collected images for various damaged infrastructure due to natural or man made calamities and damaged human due to war or accidents. We have also accumulated image data for a class named non-damage that contains images with no such disaster or sign of damage in them. There are 13,720 manually annotated images in this dataset, each image is annotated by three individuals. We are also providing discriminating image class information annotated manually with bounding box for a set of 200 test images. Images are collected from different news portals, social media, and standard datasets made available by other researchers. A three layer attention model (TLAM) is trained and average five fold validation accuracy of 95.88% is achieved. Moreover, on the 200 unseen test images this accuracy is 96.48%. We also generate and compare attention maps for these test images to determine the characteristics of the trained attention model.

A Novel Disaster Image Data-set and Characteristics Analysis using Attention Model


Recently deep learning has been applied to decompose table structure with the main ideas of detecting table lines and then forming table cells. However, the existing methods face problems in dealing with tables with rotation or no internal table lines. To tackle these problems, we propose a novel table structure decomposition method, which directly detects table cells as objects and creates table structure. Extensions to the existing object detection models including effective table projection module are proposed to adapt to the table cell detection.
To support the training of the enhanced models, we create a large image-based table dataset TableCell with cell level annotations. A novel and efficient semi-supervised method is proposed to annotate this new dataset. Experiments demonstrate that our proposed table structure decomposition method is simple, effective and robust to the tables without table lines or with rotation.

Image-based table cell detection: a new dataset and an improved detection method

Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) is adopted to tackle the problem of convolution operation in non-Euclidean space. Previous works on GCN have made some progress, however, one of their limitations is that the design of Adjacency Matrix (AM) as GCN input requires domain knowledge and such process is cumbersome, tedious and error-prone. In addition, entries of a fixed Adjacency Matrix are generally designed as binary values (i.e., ones and zeros) which can not reflect the real relationship between nodes. Meanwhile, many applications require a weighted and dynamic Adjacency Matrix instead of an unweighted and fixed AM, and there are few works focusing on designing a more flexible Adjacency Matrix. To that end, we propose an end-to-end algorithm to improve the GCN performance by focusing on the Adjacency Matrix. We first provide a calculation method called node information entropy to update the matrix. Then, we perform the search strategy in a continuous space and introduce the Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) method to overcome the drawback of the discrete space search. Finally, we integrate the GCN and reinforcement learning into an end-to-end framework. Our method can automatically define the Adjacency Matrix without prior knowledge. At the same time, the proposed approach can deal with any size of the matrix and provide a better AM for network. Four popular datasets are selected to evaluate the capability of our algorithm. The method in this paper achieves the state-of-the-art performance on Cora and Pubmed datasets, with the accuracy of 84.6% and 81.6% respectively.

AOAM: Automatic Optimization of Adjacency Matrix for Graph Convolutional Network

Monocular depth estimation is a challenging problem in computer vision and is crucial for understanding 3D scene geometry. Recently, deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) based methods have improved the estimation accuracy significantly. However, existing methods fail to consider complex textures and geometries in scenes, thereby resulting in loss of local details, distorted object boundaries, and blurry reconstruction. In this paper, we proposed an end-to-end multi-scale residual pyramid attention network (MRPAN) to mitigate these problems. First, we propose a multi-scale attention context aggregation (MACA) module, which consists of spatial attention module (SAM) and global attention module (GAM). By considering the position and scale correlation of pixels from spatial and global perspectives, the proposed module can adaptively learn the similarity between pixels so as to obtain more global context information of the image and recover complex structures in the scene. Then we proposed an improved residual refinement module (RRM) to further refine the scene structure, giving
rise to deeper semantic information and retain more local details. Experimental results show that our method achieves more promising performance in object boundaries and local details compared with other state-of-the-art methods.

One important and particularly challenging step in the optical character recognition of historical documents with complex layouts, such as newspapers, is the separation of text from non-text content (e.g. page borders or illustrations). This step is commonly referred to as page segmentation. While various rule-based algorithms have been proposed, the applicability of Deep Neural Networks for this task recently has gained a lot of attention. In this paper, we perform a systematic evaluation of 11 different published backbone architectures and 9 different tiling and scaling configurations for separating text, tables or table column lines. We also show the influence of the number of labels and the number of training pages on the segmentation quality, which we measure using the Matthews Correlation Coefficient. Our results show that (depending on the task) Inception-ResNet- v2 and EfficientNet backbones work best, vertical tiling is generally preferable to other tiling approaches, and training data that comprises 30 to 40 pages will be sufficient most of the time.

An Evaluation of DNN Architectures for Page Segmentation of Historical Newspapers

Current 3D object detection methods adopt an analogous box prediction structure with the 2D methods, which predict center and size of the object simultaneously in a box regression procedure, leading to the poor performance of 3D detector to a great extent. In this work, we propose S-VoteNet, which converts the prediction of 3D bounding box into two parts: center prediction and size prediction. By introducing a novel spherical proposal, S-VoteNet uses vote groups to predict the center and radius of object rather than all parameters of 3D bounding box. The prediction of radius is used to constrain the object size, and the radius-based spherical center loss is applied to measure the geometric distance between the proposal and ground-truth. To make better use of the geometric information provided by point cloud, S-VoteNet gathers seed points whose corresponding votes are within the vote groups for seed group generation. Seed groups are then consumed for box size regression and orientation estimation. By decoupling the localization and size estimation, our method effectively reduces the regression pressure of the 3D detector. Experimental results on SUN RGB-D 3D detection benchmark demonstrate that our S-VoteNet achieves state-of-the-art performance by using only point cloud as input.
