Visual Question Answering (VQA) models employ attention mechanisms to discover image locations that are most relevant for answering a specific question. For this purpose, several multimodal fusion strategies have been proposed, ranging from relatively simple operations (e.g. linear sum) to more complex ones (e.g. Block). The resulting multimodal representations define an intermediate feature space for capturing the interplay between visual and semantic features, that is helpful in selectively focusing on image content. In this paper, we propose a question-agnostic attention mechanism that is complementary to the existing question-dependent attention mechanisms. Our proposed model parses object instances to obtain an ‘object map’ and applies this map on the visual features to generateQuestion-Agnostic Attention (QAA) features. In contrast to question-dependent attention approaches that are learned end-to-end, the proposed QAA does not involve question-specific training, and can be easily included in almost any existing VQA model as a generic light-weight pre-processing step, thereby adding minimal computation overhead for training. Further, when used in complement with the question-dependent attention, the QAA allows the model to focus on the regions containing objects that might have been overlooked by the learned attention representation. Through extensive evaluation on VQAv1, VQAv2and TDIUC datasets, we show that incorporating complementaryQAA allows state-of-the-art VQA models to perform better, and provides significant boost to simplistic VQA models, enabling them to performance on par with highly sophisticated fusion strategies

# Welcome everyone to ACL 2022!

The 60th Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics is taking place May 22-27, 2022 as a hybrid event, in Dublin and online. We are happy to welcome all of you to this anniversary edition with an almost 50-50 in-person and virtual participation. 
The main conference program features oral presentations, in-person and virtual posters and demo sessions, a plenary session for our best paper presentations and awards, three amazing keynote events and two new initiatives of invited talks: Spotlight Talks for Young Rising Stars (STIRS) and The Next Big Idea Talks. Posters (including Findings of ACL 2022) and demos are grouped by areas for both the in-person and the virtual sessions. For the virtual component, the talks will be on Zoom and the posters and the demos will be in GatherTown. The Student Research Workshop will have an oral session and a poster session as part of Poster Session 1. The program also features eight Tutorials and 28 Workshops.

ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review. 

In this edition of the **ICPR 2020** Conference, there are 1407 Oral/Poster presentations organized in five Tracks: 
- Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning for Pattern Analysis; 
- Biometrics, Human Analysis and Behavior Understanding; Computer Vision, Robotics and Intelligent Systems; 
- Document and Media Analysis; and 
- Image and Signal Processing. 

The **ICPR 2020** Main Conference program also includes 7 Keynotes from prominent world-renowned scientists, 8 Tutorials, 28 Demos, 8 Challenges, 2 Panels, as well as an Industry/Sponsor Exhibition. In addition, 41 Workshops on a range of important current and emerging research topics complete the ICPR 2020 program. 


As different urban scenes are similar but still not completely consistent, coupled with the complexity of labeling directly in 3D, high-level understanding of 3D scenes has always been a tricky problem. In this paper, we propose a procedural approach for 3D semantic expression of urban scenes based on active learning. We first start with a small labeled image set to fine-tune a semantic segmentation network and then project its probability map onto a 3D mesh model for fusion, finally outputs a 3D semantic mesh model in which each facet has a semantic label and a heat model showing each facet’s confidence. Our key observation is that our algorithm is iterative, in each iteration, we use the output semantic model as a supervision to select several valuable images for annotation to co-participate in the fine-tuning for overall improvement. In this way, we reduce the workload of labeling but not the quality of 3D semantic model. Using urban areas from two different cities, we show the potential of our method and demonstrate its effectiveness.

3D Semantic Labeling of Photogrammetry Meshes Based on Active Learning


This paper studies the problem of Person Re-Identification (ReID)
for large-scale applications. Recent research efforts have been devoted
to building complicated part models, which introduce considerably
high computational cost and memory consumption, inhibiting its practicability
in large-scale applications. This paper aims to develop a novel learning
strategy to find efficient feature embeddings while maintaining the
balance of accuracy and model complexity. More specifically, we find
by enhancing the classical triplet loss together with cross-entropy
loss, our method can explore the hard examples and build a discriminant
feature embedding yet compact enough for large-scale applications.
Our method is carried out progressively using Bayesian optimization,
and we call it the Progressive Learning Algorithm (PLA). Extensive
experiments on three large-scale datasets show that our PLA is comparable
or better than the state-of-the-arts. Especially, on the challenging
Market-1501 dataset, we achieve Rank-1=94.7%/mAP=89.4% while saving
at least 30\% parameters than strong part models.

Time Series Data Augmentation for Neural Networks by Time Warping with a Discriminative Teacher

We propose two face representations that are blind
to facial expressions associated to emotional responses. This work
is in part motivated by new international regulations for personal
data protection, which enforce data controllers to protect any
kind of sensitive information involved in automatic processes. The
advances in Affective Computing have contributed to improve
human-machine interfaces but, at the same time, the capacity
to monitorize emotional responses triggers potential risks for
humans, both in terms of fairness and privacy. We propose two
different methods to learn these expression-blinded facial features.
We show that it is possible to eliminate information related
to emotion recognition tasks, while the performance of subject
verification, gender recognition, and ethnicity classification are
just slightly affected. We also present an application to train
fairer classifiers in a case study of attractiveness classification
with respect to a protected facial expression attribute. The results
demonstrate that it is possible to reduce emotional information in
the face representation while retaining competitive performance
in other face-based artificial intelligence tasks.

Learning Emotional-Blinded Face Representations

We propose a new task named Audio-driven Performance Video Generation (APVG), which aims to synthesize the video of a person playing a certain instrument guided by a given music audio clip. It is a challenging task to generate the high-dimensional temporal consistent videos from low dimensional audio modality. In this paper, we propose a multi-staged framework to achieve this new task to generate realistic and synchronized performance video from given music. Firstly, we provide both global appearance and local spatial information by generating the coarse videos and keypoints of body and hands from a given music respectively. Then, we propose to transform the generated keypoints to heatmap via a differentiable space transformer, since the heatmap offers more spatial information but is harder to generate directly from audio. Finally, we propose a Structured Temporal UNet (STU) to extract both intra-frame structured information and inter-frame temporal consistency. They are obtained via graph-based structure module, and CNN-GRU based high-level temporal module respectively for final video generation. Comprehensive experiments validate the effectiveness of our proposed framework.

Let's Play Music: Audio-driven Performance Video Generation

Few-shot segmentation presents a significant challenge for semantic scene understanding under limited supervision. Namely, this task targets at generalizing the segmentation ability of the model to new categories given a few samples. In order to obtain complete scene information, we extend the RGB-centric methods to take advantage of complementary depth information. In this paper, we propose a two-stream deep neural network based on metric learning. Our method, known as RDNet, learns class-specific prototype representations within RGB and depth embedding spaces, respectively. The learned prototypes provide effective semantic guidance on the corresponding RGB and depth query image, leading to more accurate performance. Moreover, we build a novel outdoor scene dataset, known as Cityscapes-3i, using labeled RGB images and depth images from the Cityscapes dataset. We also perform ablation studies to explore the effective use of depth information in few-shot segmentation tasks. Experiments on Cityscapes-3i show that our method achieves excellent results with visual and complementary geometric cues from only a few labeled examples.

Incorporating Depth Information into Few-Shot Semantic Segmentation


Offline signature verification, to determine whether a handwritten signature image is genuine or forged for a claimed identity, is needed in many applications. In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end cut-and-compare network for offline signature verification. Based on the Spatial Transformer Network (STN), discriminative regions are segmented from a pair of input signature images and are compared attentively with help of Attentive Recurrent Comparator (ARC). An adaptive distance fusion module is proposed to fuse the distances of these regions. To address the intrapersonal variability problem, we design a smoothed double-margin loss to train the network. The proposed network achieves state-of-the-art performance on CEDAR, GPDS Synthetic, BHSig-H and BHSig-B datasets of different languages. Furthermore, our network shows strong generalization ability on cross-language test.

Cut and Compare: End-to-end Offline Signature Verification Network

State-of-the-art visual relation detection methods mostly rely on object information extracted from RGB images such as 2D bounding boxes, feature maps, and predicted class probabilities. Depth maps can additionally provide valuable information on object relations, e.g. helping to detect not only spatial relations, such as standing behind, but also non-spatial relations, such as holding. In this work, we study the effect of using different object information with a focus on depth maps. To enable this study, we release a new synthetic dataset of depth maps, VG-Depth, as an
extension to Visual Genome (VG). We also note that given the highly imbalanced distribution of relations in VG, typical evaluation metrics for visual relation detection
cannot reveal improvements of under-represented relations. To address this problem, we propose using an additional metric, calling it Macro Recall@K, and demonstrate its remarkable performance on VG. Finally, our experiments confirm that by effective utilization of depth maps within a simple, yet competitive framework, the performance of visual relation detection can be improved by a margin of up to 8%.

Improving Visual Relation Detection Using Depth Maps




Recurrent neural network (RNN) is a class of artificial neural networks where connections between nodes form a directed graph along a temporal sequence. This allows it to exhibit temporal dynamic behavior, which makes it applicable to tasks such as handwriting recognition or speech recognition. However, the RNN relies heavily on the automatic learning ability to update parameters which concentrate on the data flow but seldom considers the feature extraction capability of the gate mechanism. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture to build the forget gate which is generated by multiple bases. Instead of using the traditional single-layer fully-connected network, we use a Multiple Attention (MA) based network to generate the forget gate which refines the optimization space of gate function and improve the granularity of the recurrent neural network to approximate the map in the ground truth. Credit to the MA structure on the gate mechanism. Our model has a better feature extraction capability than other known models. MA-LSTM is an alternative module which can directly replace the recurrent neural network and has achieved good performance in many areas that people are concerned about.

MA-LSTM: A Multi-attention Based LSTM for Complex Pattern Extraction


The motivation for this work is the primary need of screening Tuberculosis (TB) positive patients in the severely resource constrained regions of the world. Chest X-ray (CXR) is considered to be a promising indicator for the onset of TB, but the lack of skilled radiologists in such resource constrained regions degrades the situation. Therefore, several computer aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been proposed to solve the decision making problem, which includes hand-engineered feature extraction methods to deep learning or Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based methods. Feature extraction, being a time and resource intensive process, often delays the process of mass screening. Hence, an end to end CNN architecture is proposed in this work to solve the problem. Two benchmark CXR datasets have been used in this work, collected from Shenzhen (China) and Montgomery County (USA), on which the proposed methodology achieved a maximum abnormality detection accuracy (ACC) of 91.7% (0.96 AUC) and 87.47% (0.92 AUC) respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the obtained results are superior to the state of the art results that have solely used deep learning methodologies on the aforementioned datasets.

Inception-based Deep Learning Architecture for Tuberculosis Screening using Chest X-rays

Depth perception is essential for scene understanding, autonomous navigation and augmented reality. Depth estimation from a single 2D image is challenging due to the lack of reliable cues (e.g. stereo correspondences and motions). Modern approaches exploited multi-scale feature extraction to provide more powerful representations for deep networks. However, these studies only used simple addition or concatenation to combine the extracted multi-scale features. This paper proposes a novel region-based self-attention (rSA) unit for effective feature fusions. The rSA recalibrates the multi-scale responses by explicitly modelling the interdependency between channels in separate image regions. We discretize continuous depths to solve an ordinal depth classification in which the relative order between categories is preserved. We performed experiments on a dataset of 4410 RGB-D images, captured in outdoor environments at the University of Wollongong’s campus. In our experimental results, the proposed module improves the lightweight models on small-sized datasets by 22% - 40%.
